Our society is based on trust. If we lose trust probably all the society will collapse. We are believers. We think our parents are actually our parents and our sisters and brothers too, we believe we have a trustful relationship with our wife or husband. We believe in Goods we have never seen, we believe in written history we have never witnessed, we believe the presidents are educated people, we believe the images we are presented in newspapers, magazines and television correspond to the reality and express —in a synthetic form— what is really happening on earth, we believe the money we have is not false, we believe we go war because of good reasons and we fight also in order to protect something sacred we believe we have. In short, the reason we live the way we do is just because we trust our society but we have nothing concrete to probe that our beliefs are right.
Maybe we are so accustomed to be believers that even when the case is lost we want to continue to believe in it, we accept replicas even when we don't know how the originals are and we cannot compare them. We were programed to be believers and so long there is not another system around we will remain believers in spite of all odds.
But maybe we are already in another system, not based on trust. Maybe we live in a kind of a criminal system where everybody distrust the others and try to deceive them in order to use them, rob them or just fuck them. Maybe we are not believers anymore, we are cynical who just try to pose as believers when the circumstances demand it. You are asking why we don't bother about the originals, but others are maybe thinking "Who cares anyway".
We live more and more in a entertainment society, where all that count is money to participate. We know is a fake world, but as long as we enjoy it and have the money to pay the admission we don't care about anything under the sun. We just hope we will be part of the minority who could afford the ticket, otherwise we will not be the cynical ones but the bitters ones.
Personally I'm not attracted neither by the believers society nor the cynical/bitter world but I still think trust is a very valuable tool for constructing a responsible society. I see more and more people around me becoming cynical, they don't believe but in their wallets and they don't care about the rest. I think people should look after something more rational because cynicism is a high price bill and destroy everything on his way replacing it with nothing but wind. We are talking photography which is not foreigner to all this, maybe we cannot use it as a way to probe the veracity of what we show, but photography is more than that, photography is about an attitude toward the world, the persons, the nature, the human thoughts. And this attitude can be a constructive one which is not so far from what we understand as truth.
