Oceanides
is a photographic project of underwater dance. I began this project
together with a dancer from one of Toronto's ballet companies. It
began in an informal and experimental way, with the idea of transposing
the discipline of classical ballet to the weightlessness of the
underwater world. We worked in a private pool over a two-year span
using variations of lighting, film and choreography. In performance,
so much of the dancer’s movements appear steeped in the illusion
of weightlessness, but underwater that finesse is swept away. Gravity
ceases its familiar pull, and a floating torpor erodes the body’s
expressive ability. Water gives the photographer a new set of challenges
as well, and the whorling, random nature of it forces a hypervigilance
in composing. Working in such a protean environment requires a global
awareness of the many variables which
continually change and come together. |

Oceánidas en un proyecto fotográfico sobre danza
subacuática. Comencé este proyecto con una bailarina
de una compañía de ballet en Toronto. Comenzó
de manera informal y experimental, tratando de transportar la
disciplina del ballet clásico a la ingravidez del mundo
submarino. Trabajamos durante dos años en una alberca privada
usando distintas iluminaciones, películas y coreografías.
Muchos de los movimientos de la balarina parecen ser bajo el agua
pero al esatar sumergida la finura de esos movimientos desaparece
al faltar la fuerza de gravedad y una torpeza flotante erosiona
la expresividad corporal, también trabajar bajo el agua
implica una serie de retos para el fotógrafo debido a su
naturaleza azarosa y siempre cambiante en sus variables que obliga
una vigilancia estricta de la composición.
