Times Run Faster by Pedro Meyer

I am sitting here, in front of my computer screen thinking about my editorial for this month. I think of a subject, and soon enough I cross that idea out, then think of another idea, and the same thing happens again, and so hours go by, without me finding a suitable topic. I must ask myself, what is happening?.
I finally come to the conclusion, and perhaps this can also help to illustrate the actual state of technological changes and the way we communicate, because I came to realize that this editorial at one time , when the internet pace was slower than it is today, served as a precedent of what today we have come to know as blogs, and all that happens within social networks such as Facebook.
Amongst the things that have suffered the most dramatic changes is the speed at which information is presented and discussed. Let's see, before, I used to write an editorial approximately every month or so. This coincided with the publication of our online galleries. However, at the pace events unfold and news scatter, we could hardly think of this as a monthly event, as blogs have confirmed.
Something similar happened to daily newspapers. When they first started to publish online, they did so with the same "daily" frame work that had reigned with the printed page. News, of course, kept on happening at all times, and newspapers had no option but to adapt to this new rhythm of "real time" and re-think their publishing strategies.
In ZoneZero we are on the brink of making similar adjustments. Soon, this editorial page will have the format of a blog, and I will be updating you with information and ideas I believe worth sharing at a much freer and faster pace. You will also be able to give me your feedback on my editorial, and we will be able to have an online "conversation" in real time.
Of course, this will mean that it will be harder to keep up, but it would be just as hard, if not harder, to give up and stop participating at all. On Facebook for example, I have been able to share ideas the moment I get them, and they are not at all limited by an outside context. For this reason, we are in the process of making new tools to enable quicker and more efficient publishing within ZoneZero. I cannot help but be fascinated by how technology transcends discourse, and that content at the same time is affected by technology.
The idea will be that, whether I publish a note on Facebook, or post something new in my ZoneZero editorial page, you will be able to read it. This is, after all, one of the core criteria behind the web. Just like we have all become photographers with the development of intelligent photographic cameras, we have also all become in a way, editorialists. Today, everybody has something to share, comment, critique, and this I find incredibly interesting and healthy, how relationships stop being passive and become active. Personally I find much to celebrate.

From June 18th to October 18th 2010 the McCord Museum of Canadian History in Montreal, Canada will present the exhibition "After Notman" on the McGill College Avenue, between Ste. Catherine Street and De Maisonneuve Boulevard.
The exhibition will be comprised of 13 structures that offer historical and current views of Montreal, with 24 photographs taken in the 19th century by William Notman (1826-1891) superimposed with 24 photos taken by Poland-born photographer Andrzej Maciejewski between 1999 and 2001. Additionally there will be three structures positioned along the route between McGill College Avenue and the McCord. Each of the panels will present an historical photograph of the same site, so the visitors can compare on the spot how Montreal has changed.
"After Notman" project was created with support of Canada Council for the Arts. Andrzej Maciejewski used technique called rephotography. This technique, introduced in 1970's by American photographer Mark Klett, consists in precise re-taking of old pictures, using exactly the same vantage point and in the same light and weather conditions. Andrzej rephotographed thirty four 19th Century views of Montreal coming from Notman Studio. "After Notman" project was presented in McCord Museum of Canadian History at year-long exhibition, then visited several other venues in Quebec as a travelling exhibition and has been included into premanent virtual exposition of the McCord Museum (and the Virtual Museum of Canada) under the title "Urban Life Through Two Lenses". Book "After Notman", published in 2003, for several weeks kept high position at the "Glob and Mail" list of bestsellers. The outdoor presentation of "After Notman", which takes place this summer, will give the audience another opportunity for reflection on our day-to-day lives and the passing of time.
Additionally the outdoor exhibition employs a new technology. Each photo in the exhibition will carry a bar code that gives access to a range of information. This data can be decrypted and displayed on the visitor's smart phone screen by simply snapping a photo of the bar code.
Artist is now preparing for another rephotographic project, called "The Link", including Ottawa, Rideau Canal and Kingston City.
Andrzej Maciejewski is available for the telephone interviews at 613 877 4532. He may be also reached by e-mail: am@klotzekstudio.com. Official website of the artist: http://www.klotzekstudio.com . |

Dear Pedro
First I wish I can write to you in spanish but sorry I ca'nt I'm french from Canada. I realy enjoy read your editorial. We can see those days how much world is small. This is one gift of internet to communicate.
I was in West Africa few months ago there I saw what mean material poverty. In the same time I discover over there how much peoples are beautiful and so much open to others.
I have done few photographies of peoples and wish I will exhibit may be soon.
I live in Montréal nice rich city with many superficial things and thinking. I wish world will learn to share with others. May be I'm idealist but if we dont work this out it will never happen.
You can see some of my work zone zero (Nude)
thank you
Mario

Dear Pedro,
The modern notion and defense of speed is fascinating, as if the wiring brings certain wisdom. Your clarity and insight are more Old World than you might think. And I for one am grateful for it. |

Pedro,

Saludos. |
