The 100 drawings that comprise this exhibition are identical to photographs published in the press; yet they are not reprints, photocopies, nor mechanical reproductions of any kind. The incredible resemblance to newspaper photographs is the result of the draughtsman’s dedication in reproducing every one of the thousands of dots that make up the grid of these images.
The tremendous realism of these pencil marks is not based on the children’s faces, but rather on their poor reproduction in newsprint. Their meticulous imitation required the use of a microscope. Through this painstaking work, the artist obliges us to reflect on the dramatic contrast between the overwhelming tragedy of a lost child and the poverty of the printed media that society employs in these cases. Each drawing represents many, many hours of work, and the whole series took more than three years to complete.
